Help understanding your child’s evaluation

You have a psychological, psychoeducational, or neuropsychological evaluation for your child, and you’re not sure what the results mean or what to ask the school for. I review the evaluation with you and turn the findings into a plan you can use.

I’m John Hite, Psy.D., a school psychologist and applied researcher. Much of my research is about how evaluation reports are written and how families use them. Common problems are technical language, scores without explanation, and recommendations too vague to act on.

What I look for

  • Whether the report answers the question that led to the evaluation, such as dyslexia, or ADHD versus anxiety or mood problems

  • Whether the recommendations follow from the findings

  • Whether the recommendations are specific enough for the school to act on

This helps when

  • You want a second opinion on a school or private evaluation

  • The report is long and hard to follow

  • The recommendations don’t seem to match the findings

  • The school and a private clinician see your child differently

  • You’re heading into an IEP or 504 meeting and want to know what to ask for

How it works

  • We start with a conversation about your child and your questions

  • I read the evaluation, school records, and progress reports

  • We meet to go through the findings in plain language

  • You leave with a short list of what to request at school, and questions for the clinician if anything is unclear or missing

If your child needs a new evaluation, I provide psychological evaluations separately at the Arbit Center for Mental Health in Washington, D.C.
